Aida

Puppet

Brief:  Make a light weight elephant puppet suitable for stage and touring, plus a rehearsal prop.

Production: English National Opera’s West End production of Aida in 2007.

Role: Lead Maker.

Client:  Kinetika Design Studio

This elephant puppet is made from light weight fibreglass rod on an aluminium frame.  It is covered with silk painted by hand at the Zandra Rhodes studio, who also designed the costumes for the show.

The silk was applied to the elephant puppet frame very carefully by sewing and gluing, in a way that allowed for movement where necessary.

The make team included Iola Weir and together we also had to renovate the giant gold ball with spikes.  We re-engineered it so that the spikes were removable for transport and repainted it gold with a french enamel varnish finish.
